Williamson Trophy Review - 2nd Round
25/04/2010 - Nick Archer
Holders, Kidderminster Victoria eased into the Semi-Finals of the 2010 Graham Williamson Trophy with a 10 wicket demolition of Moseley, who could, only, muster a disappointing 145, despite a battling 55 from Scotland’s Calum MacLeod. Vics’ Matt Pardoe took 4 for 34 before he and Craig Wood (53 not out) guided the holders home, Pardoe finishing on an accomplished 73 not out. Himley were, also, comfortable winners, by 53 runs, at Wolverhampton. Batting first, Himley were lead to 190 for seven, by skipper, Greg Wright (67) and new signing from Halesowen, Cameron Mapstone (36) with debutant, Francois Vainker (3 for 26) the most successful bowler for the home side. Veteran, Gary Williams chipped in with 3 for 42 but the Wolverhampton batsmen were not up to the task, sliding to 137 all out, with occasional bowler, Wright picking up 3 for 19 and former Wolves and Penn seamer, Danny Smith finishing with 3 for 24.

Barnt Green’s 18 year old seamer, Nick Powell, took 6 for 38, against Knowle & Dorridge, with all six of his victims clean bowled. Responding to the Green’s 204 for nine, K & D replied with 180 all out, as Powell cleaned up. Barnt Green strolled to 54, without loss, but three wickets, in four balls, by Will Mottram (3 for 25) pegged them back. Their final total owed much to Gavin Shepherd (72) and Dan Shilvock (32). After Powell dismissed Richard Johnson and David Smith, early, K & D were, always, behind the clock but Attiq Chishti (78) and Mottram (50) took them within range before Powell returned to mop up the tail. Shrewsbury reached the Semi-Final stage for the first time with a narrow 10 run success over Dorridge. Joe Leach (66 off 76 balls) and Tom Cox (39) saw the Shropshire outfit to 192 for eight, in spite of 4 for 30 from former Sutton Coldfield off-spinner, Andy Stevenson. Dorridge took heart from Abdul Hafeez’s 67 and an undefeated 37 by Andy Wing but Overseas Player, Paul Donaldson’s 4 for 30 proved decisive for Shrewsbury.

In the Plate Competition, there were victories for Kenilworth Wardens, Bromsgrove, Walmley and Walsall. Scott Stenning’s unbeaten 65 and Adam Campion’s 49 saw Wardens home, by seven wickets, against Bridgnorth, who totalled 151 for five, in 40 overs. Bromsgrove defeated Brockhampton by 61 runs in a low scoring match at St. Godwald’s Park, thanks to a decisive all-round effort from skipper, Mark Evenson, who top scored with 38 in his side’s 145 all out. He, then, took 3 for 3, as the Herefordshire Club collapsed to 84 all out. Earlier, Henry Langford had taken 5 for 32, in the Bromsgrove innings. Arif Mahmood top scored with 72 in Smethwick’s 193 for eight, against Walmley, who cantered to a five wicket victory, with three overs remaining, thanks to Danny Bromley (45), Tim Gruijters (40) and 44 from Johar Ahmed, to add to his 3 for 26 in the Smethwick innings. In a high scoring match, at Wellington, the visitors, Walsall, raced to a five wicket success, thanks to a century by Jack Manuel (100). He received excellent support from Tim Maxfield (41) and Mark Green (30 not out) as the Black Country side made light of Wellington’s 226 for six. Adam Byram (67) and Steve Lamb (40) were the best of the home side’s batsmen with Richard Rawlinson (3 for 9) and Tom Freeman (3 for 39) picking up three wickets apiece for Walsall. The pick of the Wellington bowlers had been Mark Downes (3 for 38)
