Barnt Green, Moseley, Wolverhampton and Walmley have qualified for Finals day of the BDPCL Tournament to determine a winner to go through to the National stages of the Cockspur Club Twenty20 Competition. The venue for Finals Day will be confirmed, this week and the draw will be made at the same time. Group 1 In the first match of the day, at Halesowen, Nathan Newport (87) and Dan Shilvock (59) took full advantage of some wayward bowling and poor fielding to take Barnt Green to 197 for six against Kidderminster Victoria. Craig Wood’s 86 kept Kiddi in the game but Barnt Green triumphed by 13 runs. Third Division side, Pershore produced the shock result of the day, defeating Halesowen by nine runs after posting 143 for five. Ciaran Sanders (57) and Liam Ridings (46) were the main run-getters before the Pershore attack restricted Halesowen to 134 for eight, despite 56, from Mohammed Ishfaq, and 36 from Mo Ishtiaq. In the Group Final, Pershore made 132 for five, against Barnt Green, thanks to an unbeaten 46 from David White but 68, from Stuart Shephard, and an undefeated 32, from Nick Powell, eased their side to Finals Day with more than four overs to spare. Group 2 Old Hill was the venue for Group 2 and the hosts opened the day by scoring 191 for four, against Himley, led by Chris Bending (75 not out) and Carl Whyte (55). Danny Smith picked up 3 for 41, for Himley, and Dan Bassett (83) spearheaded an impressive fightback after Nathan Round (3 for 13) had reduced the Premier Division outfit to 45 for five. Himley’s final total of 173 for seven left them 18 runs short with Old Hill progressing to the Group Final where they met Moseley, who defeated Harborne by four runs. Skipper Huw Jones (53) steered Moseley to 166 for six before Usman Awan’s 4 for 18 proved decisive as Harborne finished on 162 for eight. Ali Awan (3 for 21) was the key bowler for Moseley, as Old Hill were dismissed for a disappointing 125, in the Final, a target that proved well within the Moseley compass, as Jones (74) saw his side to a six wicket success with 16 balls in hand. Group 3 The first match in Group 3 saw the highest scoring of all the 12 matches played at this stage. Batting first, Wellington piled up 232 for six, thanks to Martin Delaney (85) and Tom Saunders (52). Penn made a great effort to reach this target, finishing on 215 for six, spearheaded by a magnificent 111 from Adam Lawley. Aneesh Kapil (78) top scored in Wolverhampton’s 176 for seven against highly fancied Shrewsbury, who responded with 172 for five, coming up four runs short. Will Parton (54) and Matthew Swift (44) were the leading scorers and skipper Ed Foster was unbeaten on 30. In the Group Final, Kapil (51) hit his second half-century of the day, in a Wolverhampton total of 161 for eight. Wellington made hard work of their reply, collapsing to 77 all out, in 14.4 overs, thereby handing Wolverhampton a passage to Finals Day. Group 4 This Group, played at Knowle & Dorridge, promised to be the most competitive but a brilliant display in the field, by Walmley, saw Dorridge crash to 84 all out in the first match with Greg Ricketts taking 3 for 11. An unbeaten 55 by Chris Booth saw Walmley romp to victory by eight wickets. Luke Parker’s 64 set K & D up for a good total, against Kenilworth Wardens, but Wardens put up a tremendous fight, finishing 10 runs short on 169 for eight, Jason Young top scoring with 78 not out. Will Mottram (4 for 33) bowled a tight final over and kept Young away from the strike. K & D, who represented BDPCL in last year’s Area and Regional stages of the Competition, batted first in the Group Final but another outstanding effort from Walmley restricted the favourites to 114 for eight, a total that would have been a lot worse without 44 from Alec Baker. Off-spinner Paul Griffiths (3 for 18) bowled four tight overs and Walmley eased through to Finals Day, on 25th July, by eight wickets, with three overs to spare, after Chris Howell hit 48 and Booth chipped in with 28. |
