It is with regret that I have to inform you that Gordon Trinder has passed away. Gordon was one of club cricket's true characters; a great leg-spinner and classy opening batsman who was as ready with a beer for his opponents as he was a suitable quip. Outside of cricket he was on Aston Villa's books and he found time to set up a successful insurance brokerage with his partner but it is cricket that he is most remembered for. Gordon played for Warwickshire 2nds and Shropshire at county level as well as Kings Heath and Solihull cricket clubs. He was Conference Cricketer of the Year in 1956 and in the following year, he became the first Conference player to register a century against Warwickshire. His cricketing feats are legion and he regularly scored over a 1000 runs and took over a hundred wickets, however, people will also remember someone who played the game in the right way, never giving an inch but always buying the first drink after the game. As a youngster at Marsh Lane, Solihull, I remember spending hours in Trinder's Corner being entertained by Gordon and learning the joy of the game that is cricket. Our thoughts are with Gordon's family, his wife Doreen and children Chris and Angela at this time. Gordon's funeral service will be held at St Alphege's Church in Solihull on Thursday 1st July at 12.00, midday, and afterwards at Solihull Cricket Club, Marsh Lane. |
