Leaders Brockhampton completed the first five matches of the season, played under the new 50 overs per side format, with an unbeaten record after defeating 2012 Champions Walsall by two wickets. On a day when the winners in all of the Premier Division matches were the home side, the Herefordshire outfit chased down Walsall’s total of 214 with more than seven overs to spare, thanks to a splendid unbeaten 88 from Wiltshire’s Henry Langford. Skipper David Powles, with 64, led Walsall to 214 all out with assistance from Paul Wicker (34) and Ben McFarlane (27 not out) but Langford’s innings clinched the game despite 4 for 61 from Tim Maxfield. Shrewsbury remain close on Brockhampton’s heels following a 13 run victory over Berkswell. A second wicket stand of 158 between Tom Cox (100) and Ed Foster (69) helped Shrewsbury to 257 for five and there was a bright innings of 40 from Worcestershire’s Joe Leach to round things off. Imran Arif finished with 4 for 55 for Berkswell who remained right in the game until they lost their last five wickets for 20 runs. James Neale opened up with 49 but the highlight was a magnificent 103 from former MCC Young Cricketer Tom Lewis. Leach (3 for 42) and Stephen Barnard (3 for 46) were the pick of the bowlers for Shrewsbury, who trail Brockhampton by three points. West Bromwich Dartmouth move up to third place following a five wicket win over Himley who racked up an astonishing 320 for three, at Sandwell Park, and lost! There was an opening stand of 292 for Himley between Greg Wright (186) and Jamie Harris (87) who were not parted until the 48th over and Wright’s innings was the highest ever individual total recorded at the ground. He faced 149 balls, struck eight sixes and 21 fours. The previous highest score was by Dartmouth legend Eric Perry between the two World Wars. Dartmouth’s run chase began with an opening stand of 106 by Kadeer Ali (57) and Basit Zaman (51) but it was a superb unbeaten 88 from Zeesh Asif that kept up the pressure, assisted by valuable knocks from Navi Poonia (34), Rawlston Tappin (33) and Mehraj Ahmed (33). Teenage off-spinner Ryan Brown did well amongst the carnage to return figures of 3 for 61 for Himley. Knowle & Dorridge, also, took advantage of friendly batting conditions as they raced to 292 for two, in 50 overs, against Kidderminster Victoria, with 145 from Alex Phillips and an unbeaten 100 from former Glamorgan captain David Hemp. Zak Turley hit 96 for the visitors who were dismissed for 236 in 45 overs to hand K & a 56 run victory. Walmley’s narrow 2 run win over Wombourne lifted them above their victims and out of the bottom two for the first time this season. Adam Breakspear hit 88 and Chris Whittock supported him with 69 in a Walmley total of 237 for nine with Dorset’s Ed Denham taking 4 for 22 for Wombourne and Michael Hill picking up 3 for 35. In reply, superb “death” bowling by Shozair Ali (2 for 48) won the game for Walmley after Wombourne appeared to be cruising to victory following 85 from Jack Biddulph and 83 from Mark Fisher. Wolverhampton went down to a five wicket defeat at Barnt Green and they are the only side in this Division without a victory. Wolverhampton, batting first, slipped to 86 for five, despite 34 from Danny Bowyer but
