 Go Back
Defeats for Leamington Spa and Himley leave Harborne standing alone at the top of the Premier Division Two table after they thumped Himley by 137 runs. The newly promoted side, who were Champions of Division Two, in 2018, piled up 299 for six, in 50 overs, thanks, mainly, to a fifth wicket stand of 183 between skipper James Hunt (105) and all-rounder Tom Payne (91). Guriq Randhawa opened with a breezy 41 before Hunt and Payne took the game away from Himley. Hunt hit nine fours and four sixes, in 104 balls, while Payne hit six fours and six sixes in 61 balls. Matt Jeavons took the first three Harborne wickets at a personal cost of 50 before Hunt and Payne took advantage of the short straight boundaries on their home patch. After losing an over from their reply, Himley’s revised target was 297 but, despite 60 from the consistent Oliver Westbury, the Black Country side crashed to 159 all out. George Land continued his fine start to the season and Payne took 3 for 33. An opening stand of 142 between Joe Carrasco (72) and Warrick Fynn (64) gave Oswestry a great start at Leamington Spa, but it needed an unbeaten 44 from number eight batsman Ben Roberts to see them to 247 after they lost all their seven wickets to fall for 40 after Carrasco and Fynn were parted. The wickets were shared between off-spinner Perry Derrick (4 for 47) and left-arm spinner Nabeel Asghar (3 for 33). Apart from Harrison Smith (52) and Chris Calcott (49), Leamington struggled, in reply, as Carrasco snapped up 5 for 43, and they were all out for 182 in the 46th over.

A superb unbeaten innings of 103 by Will Nield, who faced 57 balls and hit nine fours and six sixes, took Wolverhampton to 268 for four at Brockhampton. Arriving at the crease at 123 for four, he added 145 for the fifth wicket with Jack Stanley (37 not out) after Rahul Kaushal hit a more sedate 47 from 101 balls at the top of the innings. Brockhampton’s response didn’t pass first base, as they slumped to 121 all out in the 40th over. Nick Powell hit 45 but Zayn Hussein’s 4 for 36 ensured that Wolverhampton were comfortable winners. After two defeats in their first two games, Ombersley sprang to life with a seven wicket win at Barnards Green. The home side’s innings was something of a procession as Arti Fiaz (5 for 24) and Gareth Andrew (3 for 16) combined to dismiss them for 125 in 44.3 overs. Ombersley weren’t stretched with the bat either, cantering to victory with more than 20 overs to spare. Uday Kaul top scored with an unbeaten 39 and Josh Dell hit 30.

Bromsgrove, also, recorded their first success of the season but this was a much closer result, scraping home by two wickets after dismissing Tamworth for 146. Skipper Mark Evenson took 4 for 17 for Bromsgrove before an unbeaten 54 from Worcestershire’s Alex Milton steered his side to victory. He and Ryan Pedley (37) added 90 for the fourth wicket but after Pedley was dismissed by Josh Bowker (3 for 16), Bromsgrove lost four more wickets before Milton took them, safely, home. In spite of a terrific all-round performance by Masharraf Shazad, Halesowen slipped to a four-wicket defeat at Bridgnorth. Halesowen were soon reduced to 46 for five, but a sixth wicket stand 68 between Shazad (52 not out) and Wes Griffiths (37) took them to 159 for eight, after 50 overs, with Jean-Pierre Erasmus (4 for 36) the pick of the home side’s attack. Ian Gregory hit 43 for Bridgnorth who strolled to a five-wicket victory, even though Shazad (4 for 39) made them fight hard for runs during the middle of their innings.
