Division One
Reigning champions Smethwick maintained their perfect start to the season but their match at Kenilworth Wardens went to the final over before the visitors finally secured a one wicket win.
Skipper Bilal Shafayat won the toss and put Wardens in, which looked to have back-fired as there were half-centuries for a free-scoring trio in the top order. Opener Keith Bell and Harry Butler each scored 61 with Oliver Dandy adding 52 as they reached 261. There were two wickets apiece for Deepak Khatri and Tazeem Chaudry Ali.
In reply, Smethwick were set a revised target of 256 from 48 overs due to a brief rain stoppage and they made the worst possible start as they slumped to 12/2 in the fourth over. But they rallied with half-centuries from Amir Khan (55) and Khatri (50) on their way to a total of 259/9 with four balls to spare. Noble Sebastian was the pick of the bowlers with 3-50 while there were two wickets apiece for Tommy Rex and Alex Wilkinson.
At the other end of the table, Moseley are still seeking their first victory after four straight defeats, the latest a 147-run defeat at home to Knowle & Dorridge. Visiting skipper Oliver Currill top scored with an unbeaten 74 off 60 balls to help his side post an impressive 305/6 from their 50 overs. There were notable additions from Hamza Shaikh (57) and Neil Pinner (67) while there were two wickets apiece for Ali and Usman Awan.
Early success for bowler Freddie Fowler had the hosts slip to 10/2 but Moseley rallied a little with Ali Awan scoring 56 off 52 balls. Others struggled with the bat though and the basement boys could muster just 158/9. Haris Khan finished with 3-28 and both Fowler and Nick James bagged a brace.
Shrewsbury stormed to an eight-wicket win at Dorridge helped by an impressive knock of 117 by opener Peter Clark. The runs came off 102 balls and with fellow opener George Hargrave (pictured) adding 92, the pair put on 179 for the first wicket chasing down the home side’s total of 269/7. Finn Jones (45) hit the winning runs with nearly ten overs to spare.
Earlier in the day, Gabe Downes (3-53) and Dustin Melton (3-46) had Dorridge in all sorts of trouble although there were half-centuries from the home side’s Daniyal Khan (89) and skipper Joe Dodd (62).
Opener Ben Chapman-Lilley hit 80 in Barnt Green’s 241/8 at Halesowen and that total proved too much for the home side who were all out for 165. Ciaran Baker-Smith claimed 4-38 but Halesowen’s batsman failed to get going with Ed Bragg top scoring with 40. Jacques Banton finished with 4-40 and Jack Warner 3-28.
Barnards Green beat Harborne by 19 runs. The Worcestershire side posted 210/4 from 35 overs and then restricted their opponents 240/8 after they had been set a revised target of 260. Kai Smith led the run chase with 64 off 47 balls.
The game between Himley and Ombersley was abandoned after the visitors had reached 197/8 from 45 overs.
Division Two
Three games in Division Two were abandoned including the one at leaders Leamington where league newcomers Milford Hall were the visitors - a result that wrecked the Warwickshire side’s perfect start to the season.
Of the games that were played, the only one not to be affected was at Attock where visitors Berkswell eased to a six-wicket victory. Attock were struggling at 18/3 before a fourth wicket partnership of 94 between Rizwan Hussain (50) and Usama Khan (56) steadied the ship. With Muhammad Umar Shaikh taking 4-34, they posted 166 all out. A quickfire 83 off 50 balls from Amrit Basra then helped Berkswell to 167/4 in the 25th over.
At Shifnal, the home side recovered from a nightmare start to see off Kidderminster by 51 runs in a rain affected game. The hosts were reeling on 9/4 as Liam Weston (3-37) ripped through the top order. Ben Jones then picked up 4-47 including the wicket of Imran Tariq who hit 85 off 56 balls as Shifnal were dismissed for 247. In reply, six different bowlers took wickets led by Alex Renton (3-21) as Kidderminster were sent packing for just 129 as they chased down a revised target of 181 from 26 overs.
Tamworth were five-wicket winners at home to Worfield as they successfully reached a revised total of 235 in 45 overs. Alex Cappelluti was unbeaten on 63 and Alex Price added 76 off 80 balls while for the visitors, Basit Zaman (88) and Rohel Peters (63) were among the runs, helping their side to 242/9. James Rudge finished with 3-37.
The other games to be abandoned were at Old Hill and Wolverhampton where Stourbridge and West Bromwich Dartmouth were the respective visitors. Bilal Hassan scored 107no for Old Hill while Hassan Qaumi top scored for Wolverhampton with 84.
